About writing…it has always been a part
of Reji’s life. Always. She wrote her first poem when she was five
(something akin to a “Roses are Red” piece) in a letter to her friend
Kenny in Illinois. (She sees and admires this same early love for the
written word developing in her young children, today.) By the fifth
grade, she was writing epic poetry to retell stories for book reports or
reports in other subject areas. (Unfortunately, much of this early work
has been lost over the years.) In sixth grade, she wrote over one hundred
handwritten pages of a book called Dancing Flames. In Junior High, she
moved to more advanced poetry and to essays. In High School, she began
her stint with playwriting – a love she still has today. After
graduation, her mother passed on a special heirloom, a box of writings by
her great grandmother. One day, she’ll do something with that. (It is
mostly rather dated song lyrics, poetry, letters and sermons.) Somewhere
in her adulthood, Reji began a combination of writing poetry, lyrics (most
of the actual music is only in her head) and plays. For a time, she
pursued production of her plays.
Then, Reji found children’s books.
These seemed to be the first great passion she had in writing. The
concepts came easy, the words even easier. Exhilaration came with writing
children’s books that took her back to her roots and her dream to one day
be a storyteller. Somewhere in there, Reji fit in a short story and once
participated in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) on a full-length
adult novel. Although Reji indulges in learning new forms of writing and
often has become wrapped up in the new styles she is practicing – dropping
the old for a fast-paced, short-lived time – for the first time in her
life when she had moved onto short stories and novels, Reji wanted to go
back. She missed her children’s books. So, she went back.
Today, Reji writes poetry, songs,
essays, letters, plays and more and has many works in progress that suit
her current fancy at any given time. Samples of her work can be found
throughout this site. There is no written word she can think up that
isn’t worth trying to put down. She writes every day and promotes writing
in every way.
Reji’s discovered something though,
through all of the forms of the written word that have found their way
through the tips of her pens and pencils or the keys of her keyboards.
One type of prose stands alone in the passion and the love affair Reji
endears to the written word. No matter what else she writes, children’s
books, like the children for whom they are intended, will always have her
heart.
